Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” was stacked to the gills with easter eggs from Marvel lore, especially anything related to the 20th Century Fox film adaptations.
However some fans have speculated the film includes similar easter eggs in ‘The Void’ setting for other 20th Century Fox film titles. One that’s caught people’s eye in particular is a scene in which a colonial-era ship can be seen in the background.
That has led to quite a bit of speculation that the inclusion is a shoutout to Peter Weir’s beloved “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”.
Sitting down for an interview on EW’s The Awardist podcast, the film’s director Shawn Levy was asked if that reference was to M&C and said he wasn’t sure but “I think that the answer is yes… We were going to have the Titanic in it. There are some Fox-centric Easter eggs. In fact, I think Nakatomi Tower [from Die Hard] is in there, as well as the CN Tower, weirdly.”
Afterwards he checked in with the visual effects team and has since reached back out to EW to set things straight, saying it was a generic ship from their library and then “we changed its color and made custom sails. So it’s a pure DP&W ship.”
The comments come ahead of “Deadpool & Wolverine” hitting the Disney+ streaming service starting on Tuesday, November 12th.
They also follow comments by 20th Century Studios head Steve Asbell recently indicating they’re working hard on a “Master and Commander” prequel and already have a “great script” ready.
