Paramount Pictures and Skydance’s action sequel tentpole “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is still on track for a $240 million global start over its first five days.
Domestic box-office numbers have been pulled back a bit from earlier projections, whereas international numbers have increased slightly. As of now, the U.S. haul from Wednesday to Sunday is tracking to be $76 million for the five-day and $52 million for the regular Friday-Sunday three-day.
The franchise’s best five-day opening haul to date remains 2000’s “Mission: Impossible II”, which managed $78.8 million – this will come close.
Overseas the offshore opening is now tracking for around $164 million, with China eyeing a $27-30 million start – very good for a Hollywood film in that country at this point.
Faith-based child trafficking drama “Sound of Freedom” continues going strong and is on track for a second weekend of $20-22 million and a total gross of $81 million by Sunday.
Last week’s champ “Insidious: The Red Door” is looking to have a 59% drop over the three-day with a second-weekend haul of $13.5 million. It is expected to beat out “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, which will drop 53% in its third weekend for a $12.9 million haul and a total so far of $146 million.
Pixar’s “Elemental” will round out the top five with an estimated fifth weekend of $8.8 million and only a small drop of 12%. The film is expected to pass the final tally of “Lightyear” by the end of today.
