The first original feature of the Warner Bros. Discovery regime has arrived with Robert De Niro set to re-team with his “Wag the Dog” and “The Wizard of Lies” director Barry Levinson for the period mobster drama “Wise Guys”.

According to THR, the project marks something of a mini-“Goodfellas” reunion with De Niro, producer Irwin Winkler and writer Nicholas Pileggi reuniting for this feature which is intended for theatrical distribution.

The story follows Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, two Italian-American crime bosses that ran their respective families.

In 1957, Genovese attempted to assassinate Costello but failed, although he was wounded and decided to retire as much as one can retire from the Mafia. De Niro will reportedly play both characters, according to sources the trade.

The project has reportedly been championed by WBD’s new president and CEO David Zaslav, and joins the “Joker” sequel as new studio films set under the new regime.
