The family animated feature “DC League of Super-Pets” kicked off its North American box office run with $2.2 million in Thursday previews.
The film, which boasts the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Keanu Reeves and John Krasinski amongst its voice talent, is tracking to open to $25 million or more domestically over this weekend and top the chart.
The $90 million-budgeted film is expected to surpass Jordan Peele’s UFO thriller “Nope” which opened to $41 million last weekend and is expected to drop around 60% for a $15-16 million second weekend haul.
‘Super-Pets’ is the only new wide release this weekend, elsewhere B.J. Novak’s true-crime-inspired black comedy “Vengeance” is tracking for a $2 million debut in limited release.
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” premieres in very limited release today ahead of its Amazon debut next Friday, while the Zoey Deutch & Dylan O’Brien-led “Not Okay” is bypassing theatrical and releasing directly on Hulu domestically and the Disney+ Star section internationally.
