Mackenzie Davis (“Station Eleven,” “Halt and Catch Fire”) and Peter Sarsgaard (“Shattered Glass,” “Green Lantern”) have signed on to star in the period horror feature “The Damning of a Country Merchant” for Anonymous Content, Two Independent Eyes, and Anti-Worlds.
The story unfolds in 1910 Indiana and follows the patriarch of a rural mercantile family (Sarsgaard) whose way of life is suddenly disrupted by a charismatic industrialist who has entered into a secret affair with his wife (Davis).
When rising tensions mistakenly lead to the death of a customer, his wounded authority and masculinity leave him vulnerable to truly bizarre and horrific forces causing unimaginable chaos and terror.
Brooklyn-based artist Matthew Rosenbaum makes his feature directorial debut from a screenplay he wrote. Filming will take place in Belgium shortly.
The announcement comes as Rosenbaum also has a series in development titled “Tongue of Opal”, which follows a grifter who finds herself embroiled in the world of spiritualism in New York City in the 1920s.
Christian Hall, Eric Cook, Andy Starke, Reuben Walker and David Levine are set to produce ‘Country Merchant’ which is also being sold at the upcoming Cannes market later this month.
