Davies: “Doctor Who” Fate Still Uncertain

BBC, Disney+

Current “Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies says the future of the series remains uncertain several weeks on from its recent season finale.

That episode, the last of the show’s second season at the BBC and Disney+ and the fifteenth season since the series was rebooted in 2005, saw the departure of Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and the reintroduction of Billie Piper who played Rose Tyler in the early days of the reboot.

How that might be resolved is anyone’s guess, but the original two-season order for the series has been completed. The hope had been the show’s profile in the U.S. would be raised by the move to the Disney+ service. Sadly, it didn’t work.

In a column for the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (via Variety), Davies says even he doesn’t know where the series is headed right now: “We don’t know what’s happening yet” he writes.

He confirms the series is taking “a pause” while “everyone works that out” and adds that “hopefully, we’ll have news soon”.

Rumors started swirling around Gatwa’s departure before the second season premiere in April, but as ratings were down from last season things only intensified.

While there have been rumors of the BBC taking back the show and producing it on its own again for less money, so far there’s no real movement on that front.
