Filming has officially begun on David Cronenberg’s sci-fi thriller “Crimes of the Future” with Tanaya Beatty, Scott Speedman and Nadia Litz set to join Viggo Mortensen, Laa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart in the cast.

Cronenberg, working from his first original screenplay since “eXistenZ” in 1999, helms his deep dive into the near future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. While some embrace the potential of ‘transhumanism,’ others attempt to police it.

Mortensen says in a statement: “It feels like we’ve entered a story he collaborated on with Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, if that were possible. We are being pulled into a world that is not quite like this or any other, and yet is one that feels strangely familiar, immediate and quite credible. I can’t wait to see where we end up.”

Shooting has kicked off in Athens, Greece where it will run until September. Welket Bungue, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, Yorgos Karamichos and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos also star.

Robert Lantos produces and NEON will handle U.S. distribution.
