In the wake of the Snyder Cut announcement for HBO Max last week, support is surging for David Ayer’s original director’s cut of “Suicide Squad” to also be released on the service.
The 2016 film was an economic success, but scored mostly negative reviews from fans and critics. It’s a film that was famously compromised by the studio who, after it was shot, decided to retool it with a whole different tone. They shot some new footage and took it off Ayer’s hands and re-edited it with the help of a trailer cutting firm.
In the wake of the film’s release, Ayer has been vocal about how his original vision for the film had been reworked. One difference to the ‘Snyder Cut’ though is that Ayer’s cut was much closer to completion. He revealed on Twitter yesterday in a post that seems more jazzed about the possibility:
“My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the ‘Edward Scissorhands’ treatment. The film I made has never been seen.”
It’s known that Ayer’s original cut skewed much darker and featured lots more of Jared Leto’s Joker and a better opening with Enchantress. Ayer also revealed recently that Diablo’s backstory involving him inadvertently killing his family is “the only battle I won” on the film as decision makers were “allergic” to the idea.
Warners and HBO Max have yet to comment on the possibility of the ‘Ayer Cut’.
