“Empire” creator and “The Paperboy” director Lee Daniels will executive produce a reboot of classic series “The Wonder Years” which has landed a pilot production commitment at ABC.
The new half-hour comedy would focus on how a black middle class family in Montgomery, Alabama in the turbulent late 1960s made sure it was The Wonder Years for them too. The time period will be the same as the original show.
A small writer’s room for the show will be opened once ABC approves a pilot script. Saladin K. Patterson (“Dave,” “The Last OG”) will write and executive produce while Daniels and Marc Velez will executive produce.
Fred Savage, the star of the original series, will direct the pilot and executive produce. Original series co-crestor Neal Marlens will also serve as a consultant. 20th Century Fox Television is backing the project.
