Damon To Lead The Daniels’ $150M Sci-Fi Film

Universal Pictures

Two months ahead of “The Odyssey” opening in cinemas, actor Matt Damon is reportedly in talks to star in an untitled sci-fi action comedy from Oscar-winning filmmaking duo The Daniels (aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert).

The project from the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” filmmakers was the one that Ryan Gosling was briefly attached to back in March, the actor dropping out just a few days later due to scheduling conflicts.

Jack Black was also being considered before Damon became the frontrunner, while other reports suggested the likes of Brad Pitt, Oscar Isaac and Keanu Reeves were all under consideration.

The event film, set up at Universal Pictures, is slated to begin shooting this Summer in Los Angeles ahead of a planned November 19th 2027 release. Jonathan Wang will produce.

Kwan revealed at SXSW that it’s a “very existential” film and a “fun sci-fi, action comedy” with an ensemble of young talent being sought.

It’s now been revealed that the film jumps between two timelines – one in the 1980s and one in the present – with the 1980s one involving a group of teenagers. Damon would play the father of one of the teens.

It’s also said to involve “global warming, time travel, [and] a possible superhero angle”. Budgeted at $150 million, The Daniels have been developing the movie for years.
