Damon Lindelof On “Trek,” Wars & Marvel

“Watchmen” and “The Leftovers” series showrunner Damon Lindelof is in an interesting position when it comes to two famed rival sci-fi franchises – “Star Trek” and “Star Wars”.

Lindelof established himself on “Lost” where he had a working relationship with J.J. Abrams. Abrams of course went on to direct two “Star Trek” and two “Star Wars” films, all of which have proven contentious over the years amongst their respective fanbases – even as all were quite profitable.

Lindelof himself is credited for his script work on “Star Trek Into Darkness,” the film seen as the weakest of the three Kelvin timeline films which have all been slammed for essentially being more like “Star Wars” than “Star Trek”.

Speaking to Fandom this week, Lindelof was asked about Simon Pegg’s comments the other week which put a damper on the prospects of more big screen Trek due to the movies costing nearly as much as a “Star Wars” film to make, but generating only about one-third the business. Lindelof says he’s more optimistic because he says by being less all audience appealing, the creative freedom it allows could keep the franchise chugging along for decades:

“I feel like there is a wide breadth of ways to attack [‘Star Trek’], and you cannot deny that very few things have a 50-year half-life. There is something about ‘Trek’ that resonates. And while it may never be ‘Star Wars’ or ‘The Avengers,’ I still think that it’s important; those are important stories to tell.”

Lindelof was also asked about having a go at those larger Disney franchises, to which he responded he’s open to the idea so long as they take risks:

“I think that doing something in the Marvel universe, anywhere in the Marvel Universe, would be really potentially exciting for me, especially as they start to get a little bit more experimental. Some of the things that I’ve seen for ‘WandaVision,’ for example, just feel like, ‘Okay, now we’re getting somewhere.’ Particularly in a television space.

And, at some point, but certainly not in the immediate future, I feel like I would love to do something in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. Maybe a decade from now when I would no longer be blamed for ruining it. That would be a hoot.”

Speaking of “Star Wars”, USA Today Life has released an amusing blooper real from ‘Rise of Skywalker’ with a focus on Domhnall Gleeson’s General Hux doing alternate takes and flubbing his lines.
