Iconic 1980s super soap “Dallas,” with all its tales of trashy capitalist excess, may have had a hand in the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Eurythmics musician David Stewart appeared on Joss Stone’s A Cuppa Happy podcast this week and revealed that he had conversations with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev who told him he believes the CBS series gave former Soviet Union residents ideas about living in the United States.
Stewart says “He said that had more effect, that half-hour or whatever it was, than anything else. They thought that’s how people live in United States… Obviously they don’t.”
Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Victoria Principal and Linda Gray starred in the original series about an affluent and feuding Texas family. The show ran from 1978-1991 and reportedly made its way to Russian broadcasters at the time after someone brought in a VHS from overseas.
