Dakota Fanning (“The Alienist”) is set to play the female lead in “Ripley,” Showtime’s upcoming new series adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s quintet of Tom Ripley novels starting with a new take on “The Talented Mr. Ripley”.

Celebrated “Fleabag” and “Sherlock” star Andrew Scott will take on the role of Tom Ripley, a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York who is hired by a wealthy businessman to travel to Italy and try to convince his vagabond son Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) to return home.

He accepts the job, marking the first step into a complex life of deceit. Fanning will play Marge Sherwood, Dickie’s girlfriend and an American living in Italy who suspects that Tom’s affability hides darker motives. Gwyneth Paltrow played the role in the 1999 film adaptation of the novel alongside Matt Damon as Ripley and Jude Law as Dickie.

Steve Zaillian (“The Night Of”) will write and direct the entire first season and filming begins in Italy later this year.

Fanning was also recently cast as Susan Elizabeth Ford, the daughter of President Gerald Ford (Aaron Eckhart) and Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), in showtime’s political anthology series “The First Lady”.
