The CW has begun development of “The Powerpuff Girls,” a live-action series remake of Craig McCracken’s classic Cartoon Network animated series.
The original show ran for six seasons and followed Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup – three kindergarten-aged girls with superpowers who all lived with their father and creator Professor Utonium.
They were frequently called upon by the city’s mayor to help fight nearby criminals and other enemies using their powers.
In this version, the girls are now disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
The project hails from Diablo Cody (“Juno,” “Jennifer’s Body”), Heather Regnier (“Veronica Mars”) and megaproducer Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Riverdale”) with all three executive producing alongside Sarah Schechter and David Madden for Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions.
Hulu landed exclusive streaming VOD rights to the existing franchise in 2016 and is the home of both the classic series and the more recent animated reboot series.
