Over the weekend came a bunch of speculative online chatter about “Avengers: Secret Wars” – the planned sixth “Avengers” film due for release in May 2027 (after the proposed fifth film “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” in May 2026).
Some of the talk centered on next year’s “Deadpool 3” setting up elements of it, but much of the chatter was focused on who might direct the film.
As we previously knew, Michael Waldron (“Loki,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”) is writing the screenplay, but a director has not yet been locked. In fact, it’s the only announced Marvel film to date that hasn’t set a helmer.
As such, three names have now found themselves swirling around online with the most interesting one being that Marvel allegedly wants “Gravity” and “Children of Men” helmer Alfonso Cuaron to direct according to DanielRPK.
The other two rumored are names already familiar to Marvel – specifically Sam Raimi and Shawn Levy. Raimi most recently helmed “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” whilst Levy has been shooting “Deadpool 3” for the company.
None of the talk has seemed like anything other than speculation. Word did get back to one of them though, with Shawn Levy asked about the reports by ET Canada. He said only: “I read that rumour, and that’s all I’m gonna say.”
Both other upcoming works in the Phase Six era of Marvel – “Fantastic Four” and “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” – involve directors who worked on prior Marvel gigs, namely WandaVision’s Matt Shakman and “Shang-Chi” helmer Destin Daniel Cretton.
It’s expected Marvel won’t announce any potential helmer for some time to come yet.
