In one of the most talked-about moments on Film Twitter in recent weeks, Russell Crowe has hit back at a Twitter user who dissed legendary filmmaker Peter Weir’s critically acclaimed 2003 period drama “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”.
Crowe famously played Captain Jack Aubrey of the H.M.S. Surprise in the 1805 sea-faring tale in which he and his crew are tasked with hunting down and capturing a powerful French vessel.
Earlier this month, a Twitter user cracked the joke: “Lots of folk complaining about lack of sleep during the Pandemic. May I recommend Master And Commander starring the usually captivating, attention-grabbing Russell Crowe. I’ve never made it past the ten-minute mark. You’re welcome. And thanks Russell.”
Over the weekend, Crowe responded with an epic diss: “That’s the problem with kids these days. No focus. Peter Weir’s film is brilliant. An exacting, detail-oriented, epic tale of fidelity to Empire & service, regardless of the cost. Incredible cinematography by Russell Boyd & a majestic soundtrack. Definitely an adults movie.”
The film, which co-starred Paul Bettany, was nominated for ten Oscars and is regularly cited on lists of movies most deserving of a sequel that never received one.
