Some new details have emerged about “Barbarian” and “Weapons” director Zach Cregger’s upcoming reinvention of the “Resident Evil” film franchise at Sony Pictures.
Now, scooper DanielRPK (via Coming Soon) reports that “Euphoria” actor Austin Abrams will be playing an original character named Brian in the film, a character with no ties to the games.
He also confirmed this will not be a faithful adaptation of any game in the series, rather an original story set in the Resident Evil universe.
This is in line with rumours earlier this year that the story follows a hapless courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital, only to be caught up in the middle of an outbreak.
Either way, the new film is expected to return to the horror roots of the game franchise and move away from the more action-centred approach of the six Milla Jovovich-led movies – films which grossed $1.28 billion worldwide.
Oscar winner Mikey Madison was previously rumoured to be in talks for a role; no further updates are available on that. Cregger co-writes the film with Shay Hatten (“John Wick: Chapter 4,” “Army of the Dead”) and the title is currently aiming for a September 18th 2026 release.
