“Creed III” Lands Extra Punch At Box-Office

MGM

Michael B. Jordan’s third “Creed” film has easily knocked “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” off the top spot on the domestic box-office charts.

The new film pulled in a highly impressive $22 million opening day, a number that includes $5.45 million in previews. Projects, which were hovering at $38-40 million for the weekend, have now jumped up and it looks like the film will open above $50 million.

That marks a franchise high for the “Creed” films as the first took in $29 million and the second $35 million, along with a high for studio MGM as a distributor. Reviews for the film have been very good with an 87% from critics and 96% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- grade from audiences by CinemaScore.

With a $75 million production budget and international box-office still to be accounted for, the film should prove quite profitable for MGM going by these numbers.

Also opening this weekend was Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To The Swordsmith Village,” the two finale episodes and an extended episode of a new arc from the anime series, earned $4.1 million on Friday.

There’s also Guy Ritchie’s long-delayed “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre” which took just $1.07 million on Friday and is likely to finish with a woeful $2-3 million weekend debut.

As for already-in-release films, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” made just $3.1 million on Friday – indicating the film will likely drop more than 60% once again following its second-weekend record-breaking plummet last week. Its total should be up to $185 million through Sunday.

“Cocaine Bear” is tracking for a 54% fall in its second weekend to $10.6 million, whilst “Jesus Revolution” is holding surprisingly well with an $8.5 million weekend haul expected.
