“Barry” producer and writer Jason Kim will pen a spinoff of “Crazy Rich Asians,” one that centers around Gemma Chan’s Astrid Young Teo character.

Kim reportedly came in with a big pitch for the story, which explores her romance with Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr.) who was seen in the final moments of the first film. Warners got excited about the pitch and the project is now in early development.

The full sequel remains in development and is being penned by Amy Wang based on Kevin Kwan’s second book in the trilogy “China Rich Girlfriend”.

That story not only deals with Astrid and Charlie’s relationship, but continues Constance Wu and Henry Golding’s Rachel and Nick romance story as the pair go on a trip to Shanghai to find her birth father.

Jon Chu, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and John Penotti will produce the spin-off.
