Courtney B. Vance Joins “Lilo & Stitch”

Disney Pictures

Emmy and Tony Award winner Courtney B. Vance (“Lovecraft Country,” “American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson”) has joined the cast of the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” movie at Disney Pictures.

The acting veteran will play the role of Cobra Bubbles – a former CIA agent who became a social worker. Bubbles is assigned to monitor Nani’s guardianship over Lilo to determine whether she is fit enough to act as guardian. Ving Rhames voiced the character in the original.

He joins newcomer Maia Kealoha playing Lilo, Sydney Elizabeth Agudong as Nani along with Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen in supporting roles. Stitch will be CG-animated along with the other alien creatures of the story.

Dean Fleischer Camp (“Marcel the Shell With Shoes On”) directs the remake, aiming to be a major release on the Disney+ service.

The Hawaii-centric story tells of the bond between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction.

With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens watching their every move, the two bond over a shared sense of family and win the day.

Chris Kekaniokalani Bright wrote the script for the adaptation of Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois’ original film, which has developed a loyal fan base over the years.

The film made $273 million worldwide of an $80 million budget and scored an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature film. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback are producing the feature, skipping theatrical.
