Kevin Costner is reportedly circling the role of former U.S. President Bill Clinton in the political drama series “United”.
The series will center on a UN mission to East Timor in 1999. Clinton negotiated with Indonesian officials to de-escalate the conflict with the UN-backed independence movement.
Chukwudi Iwuji (“Peacemaker,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”) is being eyed to play UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. East Timor officially became a sovereign nation in 2002.
Few films have been made about the East Timor conflict, the most notable being 2009 Australian film “Balibo” starring a young Oscar Isaac as Jose Ramos-Horta.
“Night Hunter” director David Raymond will write and direct the series while Costner will executive-produce the series along with Leonardo DiCaprio. Appian Way, Onwards Studios and Prime Focus DNEG are backing the project.
Still in the early development phase, the series is to be produced in association with the United Nations. Raymond works with the UN’s Creative Community Outreach Initiative.
Costner is coming off his struggling “Horizon: An American Saga” epic, which has only managed to properly release its first chapter. The second, which screened at Venice last year, still awaits a theatrical release.
