Oscar winner Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation,” “The Beguiled”) is developing a potential limited series adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel “The Custom of the Country” which she will write and direct for the Apple TV+ service.
The 1913 novel by Edith Wharton follows Undine Spragg, a beautiful and ambitious but naive Midwestern girl who attempts to ascend in New York City society. Wharton was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for literature.
Coppola says in a statement: “Undine Spragg is my favorite literary anti-heroine and I’m excited to bring her to the screen for the first time.”
Apple is set to release Coppola’s next film “On the Rocks” starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones. That follows a young mother who reconnects with her larger than life playboy father on an adventure through New York.
