Controversial “Darling” Snags $3.1M In Previews

Warner Bros. Pictures

Olivia Wilde’s genre thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” has reportedly pulled in $3.1 million in previews between Monday’s IMAX fan screenings and Thursday evening’s standard early release.

The Florence Pugh and Harry Styles-led film was originally tracking for a $17 million debut, though industry sources are pegging the movie’s opening weekend to be higher and somewhere around or above $20 million.

Critics can’t stand the film which sits at a woeful 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, though the audience score on the same site is higher at 87%. A big part of that is the Harry Styles fanbase as Comscore exit polls reportedly indicate that women under 25 are rating the film far higher than any other demographic.

The film follows in the wake of weeks of headlines and controversy, including today with Vulture reporting that an alleged “screaming match” between Pugh and Wilde took place about three-quarters of the way through the shoot after Pugh grew fed up with Wilde’s frequent unexplained absences.

The report suggests things got bad enough that Warners’ exec Toby Emmerich had to play referee in a “long negotiation process” to get her to participate in any form of promotion for the film.

Back to the box-office, and “The Woman King” is expected to have a second weekend of $11-12 million. while “Barbarian,” “Pearl” and “See How They Run” are vying for the remaining slots in the top five.
