Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 thriller “Contagion” has scored new life this year in the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Recently appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Soderbergh discussed the increased relevancy of the film and was asked if there’s any chance of a sequel.
The prolific filmmaker indicated that he and “Contagion” scribe Scott Z. Burns are working on a project that can be seen as connected to that film, but it will NOT be a direct sequel:
“Not in a literal sense. I’ve got a project in development that Scott Burns is working with me on, that’s a kind of philosophical sequel to ‘Contagion,’ but in a different context. You’ll kind of look at the two of them as kind of paired, but very different hair colors. So, Scott and I had been talking about, ‘So, what’s the next iteration of a ‘Contagion’-type story? We have been working on that; we should probably hot foot it a little bit.”
He says he also has two new films in the works, but can’t say what they are. If all goes well though, he hopes to start shooting by the Spring. He’s also putting finishing touches on “No Sudden Move” for HBO Max and will be producing next year’s Oscars ceremony in April.
