British actor Paddy Considine (“Hot Fuzz,” “The Death of Stalin”) has been cast as Viserys Targaryen – King Viserys I – in the upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon” at HBO.
Considine marks the first piece of casting on the new series set several centuries before the events of ‘Thrones’. Viserys is chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal.
A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy. But good men do not necessarily make for great kings. His children, Rhaenyra and Aegon II, would ultimately fight a civil war over his throne that became known as the Dance of Dragons.
Miguel Sapochnik and Condal will serve as co-showrunners and will also serve as executive producers along with Martin and Vince Gerardis. Sara Lee Hess will also serve as writer and executive producer.
Considine is familiar to HBO audiences having recently starred in both “The Outsider” and “The Third Day” earlier this year. “House of the Dragon” has been given a ten-episode order and is expected to air sometime in 2022.
