Shortly after “The Conjuring 2” hit screens, there was talk of multiple spin-offs focusing on the monsters of the film, including the demonic nun and the ‘Crooked Man’ creation.
“The Nun” went forward and ended up being highly profitable for the studio. But the proposed “The Crooked Man” spin-off, with its impressively designed monster, never went anywhere.
Five years later, filmmaker James Wan put any potential of the film’s existence in the near future to bed today with an Instagram post thanking actor Javier Botet who played the character in the film.
Despite calls that it was CG, the creation was entirely practical, with Wan saying: “Javier’s movement was almost supernatural, some people knocked the character for being CGI. I filmed him in slow-mo and reverse playback — all old-school camera trickery.”
Wan then says: “Unfortunately, the spin-off movie with this character isn’t happening. Outside of my control. But maybe one day.”
Whilst it leaves the door open, it’s a pretty definitive end to several years of attempts to get the movie going. Part of that could be expense, with Wan previously claiming the spin-off would be set in a dark fairy tale realm.
