“The Conjuring: Last Rites” Box-Office Goes High

New Line Cinema

“The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the seemingly final film in the supernatural horror series, is coming in far ahead of expectations.

The title pulled in an estimated $34.6M Friday, which includes previews and is currently on track for a domestic debut of around $75 million – some suggesting it could slip $5 million higher or lower depending upon Sunday’s numbers.

That’s an opening record for a ‘Conjuring’ movie and the best start for a horror movie this year. The film also pulled in a ‘B’ CinemaScore – the weakest of the main ‘Conjuring’ films but better than “The Nun” spin-offs. Once again, with these films, there’s a large female and Latino turnout.

Disney’s theatrical re-release of “Hamilton” is also doing far better business than expected, with $3.9 million on Friday ahead of a potential $9-10 million debut weekend in cinemas and second-place launch.

The other new release was the arthouse title “Twinless” with Dylan O’Brien, which is headed for a $411,000 debut on several hundred screens. Its CinemaScore is a strong ‘A’.

They’ll all come in easily ahead of everything else with “Weapons” looking to be third after $1.45 million on Friday. Otherwise, no other films made above $1 million on Friday, suggesting The Conjuring is eating everybody’s lunch right now. “Caught Stealing,” “The Roses,,” and the “Jaws” re-release are all looking to plunge in their second weekends.
