Coen Brothers Reunite For New Project

Universal Pictures

Joel and Ethan Coen began their careers with 1984’s “Blood Simple,” and for thirty-four years the pair worked together through many classics of American cinema from “The Big Lebowski” and “Fargo” to “No Country for Old Men” and “Inside Llewyn Davis”.

Then, following their 2018 western anthology “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” for Netflix, the pair opted to go do separate projects. Joel went on to do 2021’s Denzel Washington-led black-and-white adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth”.

Ethan meanwhile tackled the documentary feature “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind” and has the exploitation road movie “Drive-Away Dolls” on the way this September.

Now, five years since they last teamed, Ethan has revealed that the pair are potentially ready to reunite for another project – one that could take priority over a planned “Drive-Away Dolls” follow-up with his wife Tricia Cooke.

According to Slashfilm, Coen himself confirmed the reunion to the July issue of Empire where he reportedly said he is developing a new project with Joel – but wasn’t forthcoming on any further details.

Previously a report back in January at World of Reel suggested it was to be a detective mystery based on Ross Macdonald‘s 1962 novel “The Zebra Striped Hearse” which follows private eye character Lew Archer. That report suggested an already completed screenplay, but still hasn’t been confirmed.

For now, it’s wait and see. Still, it would appear the Coens are getting the band back together at least once more.
