Apple Original Films title “CODA” took the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards this weekend, lining the film up as the new favourite to score a Best Picture win at the Oscars next Sunday.
The film also made history as its winning of that award, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, marks the first-ever streaming exclusive release to win the title.
The PGA shares a preferential voting system with Oscars and its top award and so is often in line with the Best Picture winner. That said, it has missed the mark three times in the last seven years.
The top Oscar award is now shaping up to be a fight between two streaming releases that have emerged as the favourites for Best Picture – “CODA” from Apple TV+ and “The Power of the Dog” from Netflix.
Back to the Producers Guild awards and “Encanto” took the top animated film prize while “Summer of Soul” scored the best documentary. On the TV front “Succession” won best drama, “Ted Lasso” best comedy, “Mare of Easttown” best mini-series, “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free” best TV movie, “The Beatles: Get Back” best docuseries, and category wins for “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” “100 Foot Wave” and “Carpool Karaoke”.
