Clooney To Helm John Grisham Baseball Film

George Clooney is attached to produce and possibly direct a film adaptation of John Grisham’s baseball-themed 2012 novel “Calico Joe” at Smokehouse Pictures and Grey Water Park Productions.

Inspired by the real-life 1920 tragedy of Ray Chapman, the novel is about a pitch thrown in 1973 that ends the career of a fictional promising major league player – sending him into a coma for three decades.

Grisham’s personal baseball experience as a teenager, where he developed a strong dislike of aggressive pitchers, also informs the story. Grant Heslov will produce the feature.
