“The Queen’s Gambit” co-creator and “Out of Sight” scribe Scott Frank is teaming with “Oz” creator and “City On a Hill” showrunner Tom Fontana along with “The Knick” and “Children of Men” actor Clive Owen for the new 1960s period drama “Monsieur Spade”.
A predominantly French-language series to be shot entirely on location in France, the series centers on the twilight years of author Dashiell Hammett’s iconic detective character Sam Spade from “The Maltese Falcon” and several short stories.
Owen plays the role of Spade who has been quietly living out his golden years in the small town of Bozuls in southern France. However it’s now 1963, the Algerian War has just ended – as will Spade’s tranquillity shortly.
Frank and Fontana co-wrote the series and Frank will direct all the episodes much as he did with “Godless” and “The Queen’s Gambit” both for Netflix.
French production company Haut et Court (“The Returned,” “The Young Pope”) is backing the project which is out to buyers as an international co-production with a premium cable network or streamer being sought.
