“Cliffhanger” Reboot Sequel Already Planned

TriStar Pictures

Late last year came the news that a planned sequel to Sylvester Stallone’s early 1990s action classic “Cliffhanger” was being majorly overhauled following Stallone exiting the project.

“Greenland” director Ric Roman Waugh was slated to helm the version with Stallone, but exited the project at the same time. Then the entire project was retooled into a whole different film which is now being considered a ‘reboot’.

Today, Deadline reports that Rocket Science and Thank You Pictures, the company producing the reboot, are already in early development of a sequel to that reboot. It’s not clear at present if any of the key cast or creatives will return.

The first film’s direction got an upgrade with “Carry-On,” “The Shallows” and “The Commuter” director Jaume Collet-Serra coming onboard to direct, while Lily James and Pierce Brosnan joined the cast.

Brosnan plays seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper, who operates a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with daughter Sydney. During a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers.

His other daughter Naomi (James), still haunted by a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and escapes. To save her family, she must confront her fears and fight for survival.

Nell Tiger Free, Olivia-Mai Barrett, Lorenzo de Moor and Franz Rogowski co-star while Ana Lily Amirpour created the story with Melanie Toast penning the script for the film which was shot in Austria late last year.

The new “Cliffhanger” is aiming for a theatrical release, including an IMAX element, presumably next year. No word as to when a sequel might go into production.
