Iconic character actor Clancy Brown has scored a key recurring role in “The Batman” spin-off series “The Penguin” for HBO Max.
Brown will appear as notorious Gotham City crime boss Salvatore Maroni. Maroni was the biggest criminal in Gotham City and Metropolis until he was set up by Carmine Falcone (Jon Turturro) and corrupt city officials to solidify Falcone’s control over the underworld.
The character was referenced repeatedly in “The Batman” but not seen as he was arrested prior to the film’s events. The series will consist of eight episodes and is said to continue the story of the film as it takes place just days after the events of the film with Gotham City still somewhat waterlogged.
With the death of Falcone and exposure of his corruption at the end of “The Batman,” the show is expected to deal with the fight for control of Gotham’s underworld as Colin Farrell’s The Penguin tries to move up.
In his way are Cristin Milioti as Carmine’s daughter Sofia Falcone trying to take control of her father’s fallen empire, and now likely Maroni whose arrest comes into question following the exposure of Falcone’s setup and crimes. Maroni was previously played Eric Roberts in “The Dark Knight” and David Zayas in the series “Gotham”.
Brown joins a cast that also includes Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deirdre O’Connell. He is familiar to DC universe fans for voicing Lex Luthor in numerous animated projects. He’ll soon be seen in “John Wick: Chapter 4” later this month.
Lauren LeFranc is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner whilst Matt Reeves executive produces. Craig Zobel is executive producing and directing the first three episodes.
