The other week came the announcement that the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was set to do a new award at the Oscars – #OscarsFanFavorite.

Rising from the ashes of the failed to launch Popular Movie Oscar suggestion a few years back, the award (which reportedly isn’t an actual Oscar, just a winner announced on the night) looks to be throwing a bone to popular films and comic book movies which have been shut out of any serious awards contention this year despite critical reaction being superior to some actual Best Picture nominees.

The nomination process works in conjunction with Twitter and promises fans rewards for tweeting their personal favorite for Best Picture with people eligible to vote up to 20 tweets each day up to March 3rd. There are conditions – you have to be over 18, you have to be a legal U.S. resident, and you have to have no criminal record.

With the voting process now open, Deadline has done a report on how the race is going so far. “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” scored an initial deluge of votes, even as it’s not eligible because it’s a director’s cut. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was then its main competitor.

However as of late this week, Sony and Amazon Prime’s streaming musical “Cinderella” is reportedly dominating the running and has “an easy No. 1 for the moment”. The film, made famous by the viral video tied to a pop-up dance performance tie-in with James Corden in a rat costume, sits at just 43% on Rotten Tomatoes.

With another week-and-a-half of voting to go though, expect several more titles to be serious contenders.
