Chu To Helm Live-Action “Lilo and Stitch”

“Crazy Rich Asians” and “G.I. Joe Retaliation” helmer Jon M. Chu is in talks to direct the live-action remake of “Lilo and Stitch” for Disney Pictures.

Mike Van Waes wrote the current draft for the project, which has not been greenlit and is still in development. A new writer is now being sought and Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich (“Aladdin”) will produce.

Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders penned and helmed the Hawaii-centric original about the bond formed between a lonely human girl and a dog-like alien named Stitch who is engineered to be a force of destruction.

Pursuing aliens, social workers and themes of family all figure into the proceedings. The film wasn’ a massive hit but has since become a favorite of kids of eveywhere.

It is unclear whether this version will be released theatrically or on Disney+ directly.
