Chris Pratt has signed on to play the one and only Garfield in Alcon Entertainment’s new animated feature film take on the “Garfield” comic strip.
Sony Pictures has taken worldwide rights (bar China) to the film which will be written by Oscar nominee David Reynolds (“Finding Nemo”) and directed by Mark Dindal (“Chicken Little”). The pair previously worked together on “The Emperor’s New Groove” at Disney.
Created by Jim Davis in 1978, the comics follow a lazy orange tabby cat often causing problems for Jon Arbuckle, his human owner, and the lovable household dog Odie.
Garfield currently holds the record as the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world and was previously adapted to screen before in two combination live-action and CG movies that starred Bill Murray as Garfield’s voice.
John Cohen, Steven P. Wegner, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson produce. DNEG Animation (“Ron’s Gone Wrong”) will handle the animation.
Pratt’s casting comes hot on the heels of his being cast as Mario in the upcoming “Super Mario Bros.” movie at Illumination Entertainment. He has also lent his voice to lead roles in two “The LEGO Movie” titles and Pixar’s “Onward”.
