Filmmaker Chris McKay (“The LEGO Batman Movie”) is in negotiations to direct and produce the monster movie “Renfield” at Universal Pictures at Skybound Entertainment.

The story will center around the character R.M. Renfield, an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but is actually a servant of the Transylvanian vampire Count Dracula.

A figure in Bram Stoker’s original novel, the role has been played by the likes of Dwight Frye, Tom Waits, Peter MacNicol, Mark Gatiss, Klaus Kinski, Nonso Anozie and Samuel Barnett on screen.

This take is based on an original pitch from “The Walking Dead” author Robert Kirkman with Ryan Ridley (“Rick and Morty”) penning the script. Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst produce.

Dexter Fletcher (“Rocketman”) was previously attached to the project. McKay recently helmed the Chris Pratt-led sci-fi feature “The Tomorrow War” for a July release.
