After playing the character for almost ten years, Chris Evans bid farewell to Steve Rogers/Captain America in 2019 with Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame”.
As a result, the currently shooting “Captain America: New World Order” will mark the first film in that franchise without him as Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Falcon has become the new Captain America.
Of course, this is the Marvel universe. With the multiverse now opening up, it allows for various incarnations of characters to show up – including a potential alternative universe Steve Rogers.
Appearing onstage at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) this weekend, Evans was asked by Popverse if he might be open to returning to the role in some form if it’s offered. He says:
“God, it’s tough. Look, I love that role deeply. It means so much to me. Do I think there are more Steve Rogers stories to tell? Sure, but at the same time, I’m very, very precious about it. I was part of something special for a very special period of time.”
He then said that as much as he loves the character and the experience of working with Marvel for a decade of playing Steve Rogers onscreen, the idea of returning to the character today: “doesn’t quite feel right, right now.”
Evans also spoke about how he has ended up in various comic book film adaptations over the years ranging from “The Losers” to “Fantastic Four,” saying it “wasn’t the plan, it wasn’t like, comics”. However, comics do “have all the right ingredients to make a good film”.
Finally, asked if there were film remakes he’d jump to star in if given a chance, he listed “Clue” and “Little Shop of Horrors” as his top choices.
