“Nomadland,” “Eternals,” and “The Rider” director Chloe Zhao reportedly has her sights on “Hamnet” as her next project, which is in the works at Amblin Partners, Hera Pictures, Neal Street Productions and Book of Shadows.
The project is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s historical novel of the same name and centers on Agnes, the wife of William Shakespeare, who is mourning the loss of her son, Hamnet.
It charts the consequences, on emotional and artistic levels, that loss brings to our lives and, in this case, serves as the backdrop to the creation of Shakespeare’s most famous play Hamlet.
Zhao will pen the script with O’Farrell. Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris and Sam Mendes are producing. The book itself won several awards, including one from the National Book Critics Circle Awards in 2020.
O’Farrell previously wrote the books “The Distance Between Us,” “This Must Be the Place,” “Instructions for a Heatwave” and “The Marriage Portrait”.
This marks one of several films Zhao’s name is attached to direct, and it’s unknown what she’s going forward with first. She previously discussed a sci-fi western Dracula movie she is writing, whilst it’s not clear if a second “Eternals” film is on the cards.
