“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” Reboot In Works

United Artists

James Bond franchise producers EON Productions are teaming with Amazon MGM Studios on a reimagining of the classic Dick Van Dyke-led family feature “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”.

Meetings are currently being set with potential writers and directors with plans for a theatrical release of the project. The original film was based on the children’s story penned by Bond author Ian Fleming in the mid-1960s.

Fellow author Roald Dahl along with Ken Hughes with Richard Maibaum adapted it for the screen in 1968 with Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli producing. Robert and Richard Sherman penned the Oscar-nominated theme song.

The story follows Caractacus Potts, a widowed unsuccessful inventor raising two kids in 1910s England. Enthralled by the wreck of a champion racecar, the family rebuilds it into the eponymous vehicle.

Together with heiress Truly Scrumptious, they engage in a wild story in which the car transforms into assorted aeronautical vehicles and try to escape from a sinister Child Catcher in a land where children have been outlawed.

The work was subsequently turned into an Olivier- and Tony-nominated stage musical which included six new Sherman brothers songs and premiered in 2002.
