Don Cheadle will play the adult version of the lead character, Dean, in the pilot for ABC’s “Wonder Years” reboot. The new take centers on a Black family in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1968.
Elisha ‘EJ’ Williams plays the 12-year-old Dean – an inquisitive and hopeful kid coming of age in a turbulent time and trying to figure out his place both within his family and in the larger world.
The adult version of Dean (voiced by Cheadle) is a new grandfather looking back on his childhood and serves as the show’s narrator.
The cast also includes Dule Hill and Saycon Sengbloh as Dean’s parents and Laura Kariuki as his older sister.
Original series star Fred Savage is directing the reboot and is one of its executive producers. Saladin K. Patterson (“The Big Bang Theory”) wrote the pilot and executive produces with Lee Daniels and Marc Velez.
