Charlize Calls Nolan’s “Odyssey” “Intimidating”

Universal Pictures

Actress Charlize Theron appears to have confirmed that she’s playing Circe in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey”.

Speaking with Variety on a red carpet this weekend, Theron dropped the surprising reveal that she hasn’t actually shot anything for the film yet with her role to begin shooting in the next few weeks.

“It’s super intimidating, I’m like the last one to show up. So I’ll be like the new kid on the block and everybody will know what they’re doing… and not me.”

Asked “how do you prepare to play the goddess of sorcery”, she smiled and responded: “I don’t know, I’m just going to talk to Chris about it and we’ll see where it goes”.

Her lack of correcting the interviewer appears to have been taken as confirmation of prior rumors which have her in the role of Circe, an enchantress on the island of Aeaea who transforms most of Odysseus’ crew into pigs.

The project has been filming since February, with shooting to continue into July and possibly August. Matt Damon leads a cast that includes Theron, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Cosmo Jarvis, Corey Hawkins, Mia Goth, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton, Nick Tarabay, Ryan Hurst, Will Yun Lee, Shiloh Fernandez, Rafi Gavron and more.

The first trailer is expected to hit cinemas with “Jurassic World Rebirth” this coming week. “The Odyssey” opens in cinems on July 17th 2026.
