Disney Pictures is set to remake Ron Howard’s 1984 sleeper fantasy rom-com hit “Splash,” but is putting a twist on the concept.
The original film starred Tom Hanks as a young man who falls in love with a mysterious woman (Daryl Hannah) who is secretly a mermaid. The new take swaps around the genders of the roles, making it a young woman who falls for a merman.
The project is being developed for Channing Tatum to take on the merman part and his “22 Jump Street” co-star Jillian Bell to play the human role. Bell came up with the pitch and now has hired Marja-Lewis Ryan (“Liked,” “Unsupervised”) to pen the script.
Tatum, Howard, Brian Grazer, Reid Carolin and Peter Kieran will produce.
