HBO Max has handed out a straight-to-series order for “Peacemaker,” a spinoff from James Gunn’s upcoming “The Suicide Squad” film being produced by Warner Bros. Television.
John Cena will play the title role in the eight-episode action adventure comedy series, reprising his role from the film. Gunn himself will also write the series, executive produce and direct multiple episodes, including the pilot.
Specifics of the plot are under wraps beyond it exploring the origins of Peacemaker – a man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.
Production is slated to begin in early 2021, prior to Gunn starting work on “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and the release of “The Suicide Squad” in cinemas on August 6th next year.
Gunn says in a statement: “‘Peacemaker’ is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand ‘The Suicide Squad’ and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”
This marks the fourth planned TV expansion of an upcoming Warners title with “Dune,” “Wonder Woman 1984” and “The Batman” all getting limited series extensions focusing on the Bene Geserit sisterhood, the Themyscira Amazons, and the Gotham PD respectively.
