Cavill, Writer Wanted For New Superman

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warners reportedly has an “intense desire” for Henry Cavill’s iteration of Superman to come back for a new project.

The news was revealed in a new feature piece in THR which goes into the future of DC. The Superman project would essentially be a “Man of Steel” sequel and is being produced by Charles Roven.

Writers are currently being sought for the project with Christopher McQuarrie, who worked with Cavill on 2018’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” at the top of the most wanted list.

No official outreach has been made at this time though, and McQuarrie’s commitments to the next two “Mission: Impossible” films may not make it feasible.

The trade also confirms reports that Dwayne Johnson is “definitely at the center” of Cavill’s return to DC. The idea of Cavill returning for a “Black Adam” cameo came about earlier this year.

However outgoing executive Walter Hamada nixed it as he had his own Superman plans – namely the Ta-Nehisi Coates-penned multi-decade-spanning story with a Black Superman.

After that, Johnson went around the executive and talked to new Warners chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy who gave it the thumbs up. Negotiations got underway before Labor Day and the scene was shot in mid-September.

What will happen with the Coates movie, produced by J.J. Abrams who remains attached, is not clear. Hamada’s exit from the studio suggests its future is in doubt.
