Appearing at a live taping in New York of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast on Wednesday evening, actor Henry Cavill talked about his return to the Superman role and a new direction for the character.
One thing is quite clear – Cavill’s return seems to hinge on him getting to do the opposite of the dark and somewhat tortured approach his character has had on screen to date. Specifically he says:
“There is such a bright future ahead for the character, and I’m so excited to tell a story with an enormously joyful Superman.”
Cavill says he never lost hope that he would return to the role someday. He was working on Netflix’s “The Witcher” when the deal came together for him to cameo in “Black Adam”. He had to get permission from “The Witcher” team with the actor saying: “it was so top secret we couldn’t tell them what”.
Upon arrival at the Warner Bros. studio in the UK for the top secret shoot, he put on the suit he wore in 2013’s “Man of Steel” rather than any of the ones he donned in subsequent films:
“I chose that one in particular because of the nostalgia attached to the suit. It was incredibly important to me to be standing there and enjoying that moment. That is one of the top moments in my career. It feels great to have the opportunity to wear it again.”
An amusing video question from Zac Snyder, who cast Cavill in “Man of Steel,” was played with the director adding: “I can’t wait to work with you in the future and you, are of course, the greatest Superman ever.” Cavill responded with:
“He’s a lovely man and I am enormously appreciative for everything he’s done for me. Those are formative memories of mine, career-wise. It is when everything changed. I remember them fondly. … Zack if you are watching … thank you, my friend”
Cavill has promised that the cameo was a “small taste” of things to come for his return to the role. Writers are currently offering pitches for the “Man of Steel” sequel, which has become a priority for Warner Bros. Discovery.
