Netflix’s recently premiered “Enola Holmes” sequel incorporate a cute standalone post-credits scene – one in which Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes finally meets his colleague Dr. John Watson (Himesh Patel) for the first time.
The scene has led to obvious chatter from fans about a potential spin-off following the pairing, certainly one could easily see Netflix keen to get going on a Cavill-led “Sherlock Holmes” franchise of its own.
Speaking with The Wrap though, Cavill has dismissed the idea and says the world of “Enola Holmes” needs to remain centered on Millie Bobby Brown’s character in order to work as that’s what separates this from other versions of the Holmes tales:
“This universe is very much Enola’s, so she’ll always be involved. I think it’s important to make that connection between the two characters.
[The scene] wasn’t a deliberate attempt to make it my own. I think living within the Enola universe, in all the literature and all the other mediums, he doesn’t have an Enola. He has a Watson, but that’s very different from having an Enola.
There’s a strong emotional connection to Enola there, there’s a similarity in how they’re raised. It allows for a slightly different viewpoint. When it comes to Enola, there’s always this emotionality with the connection, which is otherwise unique to the Enola universe.”
The sequel also saw the return of Louis Partridge as Tewkesbury, Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes, and Susan Wokoma as Edith. Both the films have scored strong critical reviews and sit at 91% and 93% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes.
The sequel was viewed for 64 million hours over its first three days since its November 4th launch. There has been no official statement or talk of a third entry in the series at this time.
