The Razzies have gone ahead after all, albeit in press release form, and “Cats” claimed the day.
The annual Golden Raspberry Awards, celebrating the worst in cinema each year, was to be held over the weekend but had to scrap its show due to the current restrictions on public gatherings regarding the coronavirus pandemic.
There was concern that the awards wouldn’t be announced at all, but they now have been revealed and Universal’s much-derided adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical has claimed the day with six wins including Worst Picture, Worst Supporting Actor and Actress (James Corden and Rebel Wilson, respectively), Worst On Screen Combo, Worst Screenplay and Worst Director.
Other winners include “Rambo: Last Blood” for Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel; John Travolta for Worst Actor (“The Fanatic” & “Trading Paint”), and Hilary Duff for Worst Actress (“The Haunting of Sharon Tate”).
The ceremony is also famous for the Razzie Redeemer Award, handed out to someone who used to be a frequent Razzie target but has returned to good graces thanks to strong work. This year it was Eddie Murphy who took that honor for “Dolemite Is My Name”.
The news arrives as Universal announced plans to release its 2020 theatrical releases so far on VOD as early as this Friday but made no mention of whether the Christmas 2019-released “Cats” will also be coming early.
