Netflix released “Castlevania: Nocturne” on Friday, a spin-off of the original “Castlevania” animated series based on the celebrated Konami video game franchise.
The series follows the story of Julia and Richter Belmont as they hunt vampires during the French Revolution, drawing inspiration from titles like its most famous entry “Castlevania: Symphony of the Night” and others like “Castlevania: Rondo of Blood” and “Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance”.
So far critics reviews have been solid with a 100% (7.9/10) on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 76/100 on Metacritic. On IMDb, user votes have it at 7.9/10. Audience reaction seems more mixed with an RT score of 54%, and an MC score of 5.3/10.
Series co-showrunner and producer Kevin Kolde recently revealed to Collider that the production team on the celebrated “Castlevania” animated series started thinking about possible spin-offs early on, throughout production of that series in fact:
“It actually started during the original series. We kind of planned the original series to end with the four seasons. The story was heading to a natural conclusion. But I think for all of us, in terms of our association and fandom with ‘Castlevania…’ the timeline is extensive and rich, so the intention was always to explore further down the timeline. Other Belmonts and other characters. So it started pretty early on.”
Asked if they have a plan in place for how many series the show could run, Kolde says:
“You always have a blueprint. You sort of have a short blueprint and a long group blueprint to where things can go. We’ll see where we end up. Hopefully, people will enjoy the first season as much as we enjoyed making it, and they’ll want to see more. We’ll see how far it goes.”
Sophie Skelton, Edward Bluemel, Zahn McClarnon, Natassja Kinski, Richard Dormer, Pixie Davies, Thuso Mbedu and Sydney James Harcourt lend their voices to the series with all episodes now available on Netflix.
