Persuasion
British actor and comedian Joel Fry (“Yesterday”) will join Sarah Snook in an adaptation of Jane Austen’s final novel “Persuasion” for Searchlight. Mahalia Belo is directing from a script by Jessica Swale.
The story follows a woman (Snook) who, many years after refusing the proposal of a young naval officer (Fry), learns he has returned from war a wealthy and decorated captain. She ponders missed opportunities and must consider her own regrets and unrequited love. [Source: THR]
The Pisces
Claire Foy has signed on to star in Melissa Broder’s critically acclaimed novel “The Pisces”. Broder and Gillian Robespierre penned the script that Robespierre will direct. Foy will play a PhD student plagued with writer’s block and an erotic infatuation with a merman. [Source: Deadline]
Fingernails
Hot off her “Promising Young Woman” role, Carey Mulligan is set to star in “Fingernails,” the English-language feature film debut of Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou (“Apples”). Cate Blanchett, Coco Francini and Andrew Upton produce.
Mulligan plays a woman who increasingly suspects her longtime relationship may not actually be the real thing. She secretly embarks on a new assignment working at an institute designed to incite and test the presence of romantic love in increasingly desperate couples. [Source: Deadline]
Brazen Virtue
Alyssa Milano will star in a film adaption of Nora Roberts’ romance thriller “Brazen Virtue” which Monika Mitchell will direct for Netflix. Suzette Couture, Donald Martin and Edithe Swensen adapted the screenplay.
Milano will play a prominent mystery writer and crime expert whose estranged sister, who led a double life as a webcam performer, is killed. The writer gets involved in the case. [Source: THR]
Where the Crawdads Sing
Taylor John Smith (“Shadow in the Clouds”) and Harris Dickinson (“The King’s Man”) are set as the two male leads of “Where the Crawdads Sing,” an adaptation of Delia Owens’ best-selling novel for 3000 Pictures and Hello Sunshine.
The story is set on the North Carolina in 1969 when a handsome boy is found dead, and a homeless loner girl (Daisy Edgar-Jones) who lives in the marshes is immediately suspected. Olivia Newman helms from a script by Lucy Alibar (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”). [Source: Deadline]
